Entertainment mogul Bill Cosby appeared in a Montgomery County, Pennsylvania court today in an atempt to persuade prosecutors not to make the comedian stand trial for a 2004 sexual assault charge.
An entertainment icon, who built a career on family-friendly comedy, Cosby now faces accusations from dozens of women that he sexually assaulted them after sedating them with drugs and alcohol, in a series of alleged attacks dating back as far as the 1960s.
Prosecutors charged the 78 year old comedian last year with sexually assaulting former Temple University basketball coach Andrea Constand less than a week before the statute of limitation ran out on the charge, however, Former Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor testified on Tuesday that he decided in 2005 not to bring charges over the Constand allegations.
Castor said his decision not to prosecute Cosby prevented the comedian from invoking his constitutional right against self-incrimination when he gave a deposition for a civil suit against Constand over a decade ago. A judge last year unsealed that testimony, in which Cosby acknowledged giving Benadryl to Constand in 2004, but portrayed the encounter as consensual.
