The show has been in the works for a while now, and was supposed to go into production last August. Seeing the film has cult following, it shouldn’t be hard for the TV series to acquire an audience.

Some of the producers from the original film will be included in production, which assures us the spin-off will be as accurate to the film as possible. The show will be executive produced by Antoine Fuqua and Will Beall as well as Jerry Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman. The film made $104 million at its debut back in 2001.

The show will take place 15 years after the action of the film. The premise will be different to the film—according to the Hollywood Reporter, the series will find “an idealistic young African-American police officer who is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with a seasoned, morally ambiguous Caucasian detective.”
