Before Ava DuVernay’s name, you will often hear the phrase “first Black woman.” She has broken barriers not only for race, but also for her gender, as a director, screenwriter, film marketer, and film distributor. Her most noted work is Selma, which follows the story of Martin Luther King Jr‘s fight for voting rights during the Civil Rights Movement.

In honor of Black History Month and award season, we’re highlighting some of Ava’s achievements thus far:

  • Ava took home Best Director Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, for her second featured film Middle of Nowhere, making her the first Black woman to do so.
