Women supporting women will ten-out-of-ten always be a beautiful thing to bear witness to, whether in the entertainment industry or in life in general. Women in music especially are fighting similar battles often times. Taylor Swift, recognizing this, has cut a generous check to Kesha, who recently has been experiencing a cruel side of the music business.
This past Friday [February 19] saw an update in Kesha’s ongoing legal battles, originally filing a lawsuit against producer Dr. Luke, claiming sexual assault and battery back when the singer was 18. Dr. Luke was never criminally charged in that claim, and Kesha is trying to find a way out of working with him without harming her career. Kesha filed a preliminary injunction in hopes that a judge would grant her the option of being able to release music outside of her contract with the Sony hitmaker, whose real name is Luke Gottwald.
On Friday, the judge ruled against this motion, keeping Kesha locked in her current contractual nightmare. The singer sobbed in court upon hearing the news and has shared in the past that she is fearful Sony won’t promote her music as heavily if she worked with a different producer.
In the days that followed this weekend, many spoke out in support of Kesha (with the hashtag #FreeKesha trending on Twitter), from fans to celebrities alike, including Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, Lorde and Lady Gaga. While Demi Lovato threw shade at Taylor Swift saying that she was “ready for self-proclaimed feminists to start speaking out or taking action for women’s rights,” T-Swift had a plan up her sleeve all along, letting her actions do the talking like the lady boss she is.
“In a show of support, Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to Kesha to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time,” a spokesperson for Swift shared with E! News.
Kesha’s mom both confirmed and celebrated the news of Swift’s donation on Twitter sharing, “A person’s wealth is not measured by what they have but by WHO they they help with it. And Taylor Swift is a truly RICH PERSON. Thank you.”
