Since the departure of Matt Schaub in 2013, the Texans have struggled to find their stride at quarterback, though they’ve been able to qualify for the playoffs in two of those years. Brian Hoyer, T.J. Yates, Ryan Mallett and Ryan Fitzpatrick have each started a significant number of games for the team since Schaub’s run ended, and the team decided it was time go after a long-term leader for their offense.

Though Osweiler is largely unproven, save some heroics during the 2015-2016 regular sesaon filling in for a struggling Peyton Manning, including a landmark victory over the New England Patriots (yes, Tom Brady played in that game. So did Gronk). However, he’s spent the last three years learning from a freshly retired Peyton Manning, went 5-2 as a starter, and helped the Broncos win the AFC West, which they eventually turned into a Super Bowl victory.
