Kendrick Lamar generally takes off at least a year after releasing a project, be it a mixtape or an album, but these last 12 months has been quite different. Following the release of To Pimp A Butterfly, K. Dot remained quite visible and active, from TV appearances and apparel endorsements to the surprise release of his untitled unmastered. album, which has since debuted atop the Billboard 200, giving him two #1 debuts in as many years. Even so, Kendrick’s train continues to push forward, and a recent BBC interview with Metro Boomin revealed that the Compton rep hit the studio and picked out “a bunch” of Metro Boomin beats. Doesn’t sound at all like a guy about to rest his laurels after an extremely successful year.
Further proof of the “Alright” rapper’s continued diligence comes in the form of actual footage of Kendrick in the studio over the weekend. There’s no tangible way to tell exactly when the video was taken, but judging by his outfit, it’s from last night, when he was courtside with DJ Khaled and Top Dawg at the Clippers game in Los Angeles.
If untitled unmastered. taught us anything, it’s that Kendrick doesn’t necessarily have immediate plans for his recordings. There are records on that album that date as far back as 2014, so who knows, some of this material and beat collection could be in an effort to put together a project that won’t come to fruition for another couple years. Still, it’s refreshing to know that he’s consistently cooking up.
