The collapse occurred in Bara Bazaar, a shopping and residential area in the city, where vendors, auto rickshaws, and huge crowds of people were bustling about.

Army troops came together with residents to rescue individuals trapped in cars and trucks, while bare-handed residents attempted to lift a 100-meter long slab of metal and cement to save those pinned underneath.

“We will take every action to save lives of those trapped beneath the collapsed flyover. Rescue is our top priority,” said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Local media reported that heavy-duty cranes were brought in to remove the massive debris, but so far all attempts have been unsuccessful.

Building collapses such as this are normal in India, where builders fail to use proper enforcement of regulations and standards. This overpass was meant to be completed back in 2013, but has constantly been delayed.
