Stephen Curry and his Golden State Warriors made NBA history last night in San Antonio, where they beat the Spurs and became just the second team ever to win 72 games in one season–and their run isn’t over. Their last game of the season is Wednesday night at home against the Grizzlies, where the Warriors will seek to win an NBA record 73rd game, which would be good enough to beat the 1995-1996 Bulls record by one victory.
Last night, the Warriors clutched their fourth quarter lead tightly and didn’t let it slip, but the same couldn’t be said for golfer Jordan Spieth, an Under Armour athlete like Curry, and one of the favorites to win this year’s Master’s tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Spieth, with a good handle on the lead on the tournament’s fourth and final day yesterday, posted an egregious score of 7 on a hole down the stretch, opening the floodgates and allowing little-known Englishman Danny Willett to win his first green jacket.
The drama went down just before the Warriors and Spurs tipped off in San Antonio last night, and Andre Iguodala–who knew how much Curry wanted his fellow Under Armour athlete to win that green jacket–trotted out during shootaround to deliver the bad news to his teammate. Curry seemed in denial at first, but he eventually collapsed into a trainer and hit the ground, writhing with grief.
