It’s the play that sold out over a year an advance, won a GRAMMY Award and regularly had the Obamas in attendance, and now Hamilton can add another accomplishment to its resume: a Pulitzer Prize. Yesterday, the winners of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize Awards were announced, and Lin Manuel-Miranda tweeted, incredulously and excitably, “PULITZER?!,” when it was announced that Hamilton, the Hip Hop reimagining of the story of America’s founding fathers that he wrote, composed and stars in, had won the prestigious award. Hamilton is just the ninth musical in the 100-year history of the Pulitzer to take home the prize for Drama.
Though it began rising to prominence–thanks to some high profile guests and reviews–back in late 2014–This year, Hamilton has blossomed into one of the biggest theater productions Broadway has ever seen. A special edition of the play was broadcast live at this year’s GRAMMY awards, just before the production took home the award for Best Musical Theater Production, and shortly after, Lin Manuel-Miranda took to The White House to freestyle with President Barack Obama, a video that quickly went viral. Furthermore, an official mixtape arranged by the cast of Hamilton is still forthcoming, and it is expected to feature the likes of Busta Rhymes, Chance The Rapper, Usher and more.
