Lauryn Hill is known as one of the most talented artists in the industry, but over the years she’s also gained a reputation for being one of the tardiest—and she’s okay with that.

In a statement issued on Sunday, May 8 via her Facebook page, Hill explained her tardiness to the Atlanta concert at Chastain Park when the acclaimed artist’s fans were left waiting for more than two hours only for Ms. Hill to arrive and give a brief performance before the venue was shut down for curfew. Hill stated her tardiness is not due to lack of care for her fans, but instead is sometimes necessary for her to be in the best creative head space possible to perform.

“I don’t show up late to shows because I don’t care. And I have nothing but love and respect for my fans. The challenge is aligning my energy with the time, taking something that isn’t easily classified or contained, and trying to make it available for others.”

Hill also went on to explain that her quest for perfection also assisted in the delay of her appearance, an explanation also given the night of the performance in response to an angry fan’s question about her “not staying after sound check.”

“Because I care so deeply about the artistic process, I scrutinize, have perfectionist tendencies, and want space made for spontaneity, which is not an easy process, with the many moving parts on the road. Some days we are more successful than others re time.”

No word if Ms. Hill will reschedule the Atlanta date to make up for the short lived performance, but she did make it clear she’s working on it.

“I have nothing but love and appreciation for the fans in Atlanta, and regret not being able to give you a full show. We are figuring out a plan to make it up to you, and will announce details as soon as we have them.”
