R&B girl group greatness is looking to make a triumphant return in 2016 and as we all know, the new batch of young women working hard to make it happen have plenty of successful examples to learn from.
From talented groups like Fifth Harmony, DMK and Good Girl to Kelly’s Rowland’s future female supergroup currently in the works by way of her new show Chasing Destiny, the new generation of ladies is well on the way to writing their own page in music history. In honor of the revitalized R&B girl group movement, let’s take a look at a few classic girl group gems that can still turn any gathering of ladies into a karaoke session where everybody knows all the words and every dance step. Did we miss any?
Salt-N-Pepa – Shoop
Salt-N- Pepa changed the game for women in Hip Hop as one of the first female rap groups and this song celebrating everything we love about Black men was an instant fan favorite.
SWV – Weak
You’ll be hard pressed to find any girl who loves R&B music and doesn’t know every word to this classic by SWV.
TLC – Creep
The ladies of TLC broke the mold when they emerged onto the scene and this song (especially the chorus) will still pack any dance floor today.
Jade – Don’t Walk Away
Jade had immense talent, sex appeal and a strong sisterhood that was easy to see in the video for this song, which soon became a classic staple in R&B music collections everywhere.
XScape – Understanding
One of many groups on this list with a few classics R&B favorites in their catalogue, Xscape had their female fanbase telling the nearest man how she needed to be understood…whether 11 or 38.
Total – Can’t You See
Total’s effortless swag and heavy Hip Hop influence were a perfect fit for the Bad Boy family and any DJ who drops this classic featuring the late Notorious B.I.G. in the club today will tell you that it’s still a banger among fans.
En Vogue – Giving Him Something He Can Feel
Originally recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1976 for the Sparkle soundtrack, this remake was one of many En Vogue songs that proved why their perfect harmonies and classy image set the bar high for every girl group who came after them.
Destiny’s Child – Soldier
Another group with several fan-favorites to choose from, Destiny’s Child struck gold (literally) with this fun track that had us all singing along.
The Supremes – Stop In The Name Of Love
The Supremes paved the way for pretty much every girl group that was born over the past 5+ decades and this classic tune features lyrics that we can all still start….or finish…today.
702 – Get It Together
These ladies put Las Vegas on the map in the world of R&B girl groups and this song is a staple slow jam that’s definitely still in rotation today.
Brownstone – If You Love Me
One of an increasing number of 90s R&B favorites that’s been given new life by way of the new generation of R&B artists, this hit still rings off today with ease.
LaBelle – Lady Marmalade
Although many may be familiar with the 2001 re-make of this classic, it was legendary diva Patti LaBelle and her LaBelle group members who first made it what it still is today.
Mokenstef – He’s Mine
This 90s tune had women everywhere singing the lyrics whether they could relate or not….and it does today!
