#BlackGirlMagic was a trending topic on Twitter yesterday [Sunday, June 5] as Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber, was officially crowned Miss USA at the annual pageant which took place in Las Vegas.

First runner-up to the 26 year old Army officer was Ms. Hawaii Chelsea Hardin, whose performance during the question-and-answer segment was unfavorable.

In contrast to Hardin’s situation, Barber impressed judges and those who watched with her response to a question regarding women in the military. As one of her sole reasons for setting out for the crown was to cease the idea of being limited as it pertains to gender and occupation, the D.C. native smiled as she listened to the question so perfectly tailored to her purpose and experience.

“The Pentagon recently made the decision to open up all combat jobs to women. Some have questioned whether this has put political correctness over our military’s ability to perform at the highest level, what are your thoughts?” Barber was asked.

With a look of extreme readiness and joy she confidently replied:

“As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to integrate to every branch of the Military. We are just as tough as men, as Commander of my unit; I’m powerful. I am dedicated. And it is important to recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Army.”

That answer was well-received and, to some, was one of the strongest answers of the night.

Talks of Donald Trump’s past dealings as co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization were also trending, with split sentiments on whether he was an asset or a liability. And to probably nobody’s surprise, Steve Harvey’s infamous slip up in his misinformed announcement of the Miss Universe winner last year was revisited.

Now that she officially has the crown, Deshauna Barber will go on to compete in the Miss Universe contest.
