Today Viacom has announced the launch of BET Play, the company’s “first-ever direct-to-consumer, subscription video on demand application.” The app grants over 100 countries access to BET’s award shows, classic TV series, comedy shows, news and live performances.

The app will be available on both iOS and Android devices, and will not require a cable or satellite subscription. The app is already available in the App Store or in Android marketplaces, and will have full capabilities for Sunday’s BET Awards, which will feature a Prince tribute, and a star-studded docket of live performances.

Michael D. Armstrong, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Viacom’s International Brand Development department, says “The launch of BET Play significantly expands the brand’s geographic availability by making it available direct to consumer in many markets where it has not previously had an established presence on TV.”
