According to an ESPN report yesterday [Thursday, June 30] the Oklahoma City Thunder were encouraged by their five-hour meeting with Kevin Durant. Today is the first day of free-agency, but Durant met with his current team first, before he visits with several other teams.
Sources, who tend to not be very reliable in these sorts of cases, told ESPN that the meeting “went well,” so Thunder fans will be slightly reassured. However, with all of his meetings still to come, Durant could still be swayed by the idea of joining the reigning two-time MVP Steph Curry on the Warriors, or by the idea of forming a “big 4” out in LA with the Clippers.
Even before this meeting, other mysterious sources told The Undefeated’s Marc Spears that the Thunder were the favorites to win Durant’s signature, barring some crazy pitch from another team (so there’s still hope Knicks fans!).
ESPN also reported the Thunder are looking to set up another meeting with Durant, this time after he has met with the other teams, just to make one last pitch. The Thunder also have their eyes on Al Horford, which could certainly be used as an incentive to persuade Durant to return to OKC.
