With all the unjust events happening including the deaths of Alston Sterling, Philando Castile and the five police officers in Dallas, TX, the desire for peace and unity is at an all time high. Rapper turned music mogul JAY Z not only released a new single titled “Spiritual,” he’s also put together a TIDAL playlist called “Songs for Survival.”
The musical selection, consisting of 24 tracks, was posted on Saturday [July 9]. A time-capsule of artists that fought for equality and justice, JAY Z features classics from Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Goodie Mobb, Kendrick Lamar, Outkast and Sam Cooke, just to name a few. There is also an appearance from Beyoncé featuring Kendrick with the song “Freedom” which was the opening performance at this year’s BET Awards.
The songs on the playlist are very encouraging and uplifting, reminding us how truly beautiful Black and brown is. The next time you’re feeling down about the crazy world around us, turn that playlist on and “Say It Loud—I’m Black and I’m Proud.”
