A member of the Canadian singing group, The Tenors, has left the quartet in hot water after altering lyrics in the Canadian National Anthem to say “All Lives Matter” while holding up a sign with the affirmation written across it.

It was Remigio Pereira who took the original lyrics, “With glowing hearts, we see thee rise. The True North strong and free,” and instead sung, “We’re all brothers and sisters. All lives matter to the great.”

“The Tenors are deeply sorry for the disrespectful and misguided lack of judgment by one member of the group acting as a ‘lone wolf’ today,” the Tenors said in an official statement posted on their Twitter.

“The other members of the group are shocked and embarrassed by the actions of Remigio Pereira, who changed the lyrics of our national anthem and used this coveted platform to serve his own political views. Our sincere apologies and regrets go out to everybody who witnessed this shameful act, to our fellow Canadians, to Major League Baseball, to our friends, families, fans and to all those affected. The actions of one member of this group were extremely selfish, and he will not be performing with The Tenors until further notice.”

For fans inside the stadium, the change might have flown right past their heads if not for the giant screen displaying Pereira’s makeshift placard, reading “United We Stand” on the back and “All Lives Matter” on the front.

While the Canadian anthem did not air in the United States, fans watching at home in Canada caught the lyrics change, with many responding in criticism of the action, deeming it in appropriate.

It’s not yet clear if Pereira quite understood the implications of the divisive line here in the States, but his group singling him out as a “lone wolf” just might suggest that he did.
