Set to arrive in theaters this November, Jeff Nichols‘ Loving tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple whose fight for the right to marry became a landmark Supreme Court decision in the 1960s.

Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga star as the couple, who were arrested in 1959 and sentenced to a year in prison for their marriage. At the time, it was illegal for an interracial couple to get married outside of Virginia and return to the state.

In 1967 the Supreme Court ruled in the Lovings’ favor by ending all race-based marriage restrictions in the U.S.
