When filmmaker Luc Besson previewed a scene from Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, we couldn’t help but be reminded of “Pour It Up.”
The director of the Fifth Element just finished production of his latest sci-fi, adapted from a French comic. Characters played by Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne and Clive Owen maintain order throughout the universe in the adventure-packed film. And if it wasn’t star-studded enough, Rihanna also has a part in the Valerian. And we hear that it’s sizzling!
USA Today caught a glimpse of Rih’s role at San Diego’s Comic-Con— the intergalatic exotic dancer, burlesque type. A nightclub owner, played by Ethan Hawke, employs her to entertain guests with her leggy figure. And when Valerian (DeHaan) steps in the club, the moment is worthy of a smirk from Bad Gal Riri. DeHaan comnents on his scene mate, “I worked with her the first two weeks of the shoot and whenever I told anybody what I was going to be doing, their jaws were on the floor and they were so jealous. And that’s all I can say.”
Acting isn’t anything new for the Bajan. Rihanna starred in animated children’s sci-fi, Home, in 2015 and action film, Battleship, in 2012. Not to mention, her roles in music videos prove of cinematic quality. Take her dark nature in “You Needed Me” and “BBHMM,” and seduction in “Kiss it Better,” and let’s not forget “Sledgehammer,” where the singer/trekkie seems even more accustomed to outer space.
Even Besson agrees on her talents. “I chose her as an actress not as a singer and I was surprised with what a gifted actress she is!” he said during a Twitter Q&A.
Watch Rihanna conquer space, time, and hearts in theaters on July, 21, 2017.
