Proposing the idea, “Lego tinkerer” and deputy editor of MIT news Maia Weinstock is looking to change the face of space travel with a Lego set to celebrate the women of NASA. Coming in a set of five, the NASA pioneers included in the proposed project are Margaret Hamilton, Katherine Johnson, Nancy Grace Roman, Mae Jemison and Sally Ride.

Iconic for their own reasons, the selected group includes the first African-America woman in space (Jemison), a mathematician who supplied critical calculations (Johnson), the onboard flight software developer for Apollo (Hamilton), one of the first female NASA executives (Roman) and the first female astronaut (Ride).

Defending her reasoning for her set in the proposal, Weinstock states, “Women have played critical roles throughout the history of the U.S. space program … yet in many cases, their contributions are unknown or under-appreciated — especially as women have historically struggled to gain acceptance in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
