In a cruel turn of events, five of the six officers who were charged with the death of Freddie Gray, are now suing Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby. It was Mosby who was assigned to the case to prosecute the six officers who were involved in the arrest and transportation of Gray, which resulted in his death.
In fact, Mosby dropped all charges against the officers after three of the officers were acquitted and one walked away because of a hung jury. Now the officers are coming after her, citing defamation, false arrest, false imprisonment and violation of constitutional rights and a few other charges.
If this case isn’t a clear evidence that the American legal system is out of whack, then we don’t know what is. Freddie Gray was arrested last year, and he broke his neck while being transported back to the police station in a large police van. Mosby wanted the police officers to be arrested after footage of Gray’s arrest came out, where it was clearly visible that he was hurt and in distress before the officers threw him into the back of the van.
The officers are also going after one of their own, including Major Samuel Cogen of the Baltimore Sheriff’s Office in their lawsuit. They believe Major Cogen helped investigate the officers and provide evidence to Mosby before she brought her case forward. In an interview with NBCNews, a defense attorney for two of the police officers said that:
“These officers were humiliated. Our position is that the charges were brought for a reason other than prosecuting criminal conduct. There was a political motivation and the charges were not supported by evidence.”
It would be a truly tragic outcome if these officers win their case, while no one will be brought to justice for the death of Freddie Gray.
