The Chicago Cubs have fired one of their DJs after his controversial song selection from a game over the weekend.
The DJ in question—his identity has yet to be revealed by the team—played a song called “Smack My B*tch Up” by an English band, Prodigy, after recently-acquired Cubs closer, Aroldis Chapman, left the game as it neared its end.
Earlier this season, Chapman was slapped with a 30-game suspension for an alleged domestic violence incident, in which Chapman reportedly choked his girlfriend and fired a gun several times in their home. An arrest was not made and charges were never filed, but the incident was enough to draw the ire of league officials, and place a black cloud over any team keen on dealing with Chapman, despite his immense talent.
Cubs pres. Carne Kenney apologized yesterday for the “irresponsible music selection.” The DJ was hired in 2015.
Chapman, a 4-time All-Star, was dealt to the Cubs from the Yankees at the trading deadline this year. In 9 games for the Cubs he’s amassed a 1.04 ERA and 4 saves, while giving up just 2 hits. Still, Chapman’s brilliance won’t make him the crown jewel of the World Series-ready Cubs anytime soon.
