This choice will probably create some controversy, whether it is with die-hard comic book fans or internet bigots, because the character Mary Jane has always been a white girl with bright red hair. This role has previously been played by Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone.

Originally, it was reported that Zendaya would be playing a character called Michelle Gonzalez, who is a different love interest from the Spider-Man universe, but the producers have supposedly changed their mind, and they will be looking to shake up the traditional Spider-Man roles.
