On October 20, 2014, McDonald was fatally shot 16 times in 13 seconds by officer Jason Van Dyke, who pleaded not guilty to first degree murder charges last year and is out on bond. Other officers said that McDonald lunged at police before he was shot, but dashcam footage of the incident contradicted their testimony.

Now Johnson is seeking to fire Van Dyke, as well as four other officers accused of giving false statements about what happened. Johnson has filed administrative charges requesting the dismissal of the five officers with the Chicago Police Board.
