Last night, the San Francisco Giants went into CitiField in Queens, New York and left out as victors thanks to a dominant pitching performance by Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner pitched a complete game, striking out six batters while walking two with over 100 pitches being thrown in his 3-0 shutout win over the defending National League champion New York Mets. On the other side, the Mets had a dominant showing on the mound by ace Noah Syndergaard, as he struck out 10 batters while being on the mound for 6 innings. But unfortunately, it was a late game 3-run home run by unlikely hero Conor Gillaspie that helped clinched a spot in the next round matchup against the Chicago Cubs.
The Mets had a amazing run during the 2nd half of the season. After a 60-62 record in late July, the Amazins went 27-13, good enough to fight their way into clinching the 1st wild card spot. Despite battling the injury bug, the Mets persevered thanks to excellent pitching and late game hitting. But once they ran into the postseason pitching dominance of MadBum, baseball experts knew that the Mets were going to be in for a long night as Bumgarner is lethal on the mound and on the road. Holding down a postseason ERA of 0.50, Madison is one of the all time greats when it comes to delivering his team a much needed win on the road. Just ask Kansas City in 2014.
