On Friday [November 4th], Common released his 11th studio album Black America Again. Exactly three days before Election Day Common used the strength of Hip Hop influence to send some very important messages for listeners to dwell on before taking action and heading out to vote.
In Black America Again, Common addressed the issues of prejudice, black standards, the perils in Hollywood as a black person, and most importantly black excellence. He even went on to touch on following your dreams by any means, as well as the power that could come from being led by substantial women.
Common partnered with Spotify to give his commentary on each of the tracks that made the album, his specific intentions, and exactly what emotions he wanted to trigger for listeners.
In regards to his song ‘The Day Women Took Over’ he stated:
“If we actually had women leading certain situations in this world it would actually be a better world.”
Black America Again is a 15-track album featuring Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Marsha Ambrosius, BJ the Chicago Kid, Tasha Cobbs, PJ, Syd, and Elena.
As such a catalyst for change in the black community, Common didn’t just stop at music to get his point across. More recently, Common released a 21-minute short film that shares the same title as the album. Directed by legendary female filmmaker, Ava Duvernay, and Bradford Young the short film aids in raising awareness on the true essence of the state of Black America.
