HBO has announced its fall renewals already, with Insecure, Westworld, and Divorce all being given the greenlit for a second season with 10 episodes apiece.
HBO’s Insecure, which stars comedian Issa Rae (who is the co-creator of the series alongside fellow comedian Larry Whitmore), has been a critical, buzzy hit for the network with the most recent episode had 500,000 viewers within three days of its broadcast, according to Nielsen and has averaged 3.2 million viewers per episode since its debut in October, according to the entertainment publication.
Insecure has been lauded as showing a non-stereotypical view of the black woman experience, examining the real-life and sometimes awkward situations that come with everyday life. The LA-based show, which was adapted from Rae’s YouTube series Awkward Black Girl, has easily become one of social media’s favorite series to tweet and watch every Sunday evening, winning over viewers by tackling everyday, relatable issues, especially as it pertains to Black women. Hot button topics of race and gender fluidity, as addressed in this season’s ninth episode, are among the many things Insecure unapologetically addresses which is refreshing in its own right.

“I grew up and was inspired by shows like ‘Seinfeld’ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,” so I always thought it would be great if we had a black show about nothing,” Issa Rae said. “I think it’s important for people to see every aspect of the Black experience, even the every day because we do normal things just like everyone else.”
In regards to the election, Issa states that Donald Trump stole her “p*ssy thunder”.
“I made a joke when our show first premiered, it was a joke about my best friend on the show being diagnosed with a broken p*ssy because she wasn’t doing well in relationships,” Rae continued. “Then President Dick comes through talking about grabbing p*ssies and just stole our p*ssy thunder.”
