Fifty years ago, Richard and Mildred Loving were fighting for Supreme Court’s legal support of interracial marriage—the Loving v. Virginia case portrayed by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Nega in 2016’s “Loving.” And that 1967 court ruling is what festival-goers will honor this year at the Mixed Remixed Festival in Los Angeles [June 10, 2017].
For the fourth year, the festival will bring together multiracial individuals and families—as well as welcome all kinds of attendees—for a free day of history, music, food, comedy, spoken word, arts and crafts, storytelling, films, panels, and book readings. The lineup for the largest organized gathering of mixed-race people includes TED speakers, comedian Tehran, author May-lee Chai, musician/filmmaker Kayla Briet, author Julie Lythcott-Haims, and and British actor David Oyelowo—who will receive the Mixed Remixed Festival’s “Storyteller’s Prize.” Sponsors include Mixed Chicks and Buntoppers hair products; 23andMe DNA testing; Final Draft software; Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill; the Leo Buscaglia Foundation; and the Puffin West Foundation.
