Rick Ross has kept a low profile over the past two years, making entrepreneurial moves and expanding his Maybach Music Empire with new artists and ventures. In 2017, Rozay returned to the music scene with his full length project Rather You Than Me, and it did not disappoint. The 14 track project produced track after track of unique neo-trap sounds that have come to define Ross’ sonic persona, and proves that not only does Ross have the ability to produce legendary bars, but a legendary sound as well. Opening up with Major Nine produced track, “Apple of My Eye” featured a hook sung by Raphael Saadiq, that is loaded with introspection on what’s been going on in his personal and professional life since we last heard from him. The opening track wasn’t the only track to feature an A-list collab. The project is loaded with superstar features from Chris Rock to Nas to Gucci that add some fun and flair to the record. Though while the features are plenty, Ross’ bars still hold their and aren’t dependant upon the assistance of others. Loaded with commentary on everything from the current political climate to his views on current rap beef, Ross doesn’t hold back on his opinions and views. With this album, Ross has solidified his place in rap history with this ninth studio project being a solid listen from start to finish, delivering bars and samples that make the overall sound of this project a classic. – Samantha Callender.
