During a press conference, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton put himself in hot water after his response to Carolina Panthers beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue’s question. After being asked about his enjoyment of the physicality of receivers in route running on the field, Newton stated, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes”, presenting a nonchalant laugh and even more awkward body language. While Newton became reprimanded for his backhanded comment by both men and women, Jourdan Rodrigue received respect for her professionalism throughout the dialogue, and released a statement below:

This afternoon I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question about one of his receivers. I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs. I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for the comments.
