Former band mate of the group N’SYNC, Lance Bass, was forced to speak out when the FDA denied him of donating blood. We are all aware of the unfortunate event that took place on the Las Vegas strip during the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on October 1st. Well like many others Lance Bass wanted to reach out and help as well. His way of helping was to donate blood in hopes of helping the victims of the horrible shooting. But according to the Federal Drug Administration, men who have had sex with other men in the past 12 months are prevented from donating blood. The 12 months is an alteration of the previous lifetime ban; which was set from the rise of AIDS epidemic in 1982 until 2015. Because Lance Bass is married to husband Michael Turchin, he was not allowed to participate. Is this a good call, especially at a time like this? It has been reported that there are 527 people currently injured and in need of blood donation. Social media being the platform that it is, Lance took to twitter to express his fury for being banned from giving blood.
“How is it STILL illegal for gays to donate blood??!! I want to donate and I’m not allowed.”
Lance has been an advocate for the LGBTQ community since his coming out in 2006. Although this situation is very unfortunate I hope that he is able to find other ways to reach out, and continues to speak on what he believes in.
