For iPhone users, download a third party browser such as Dolphin to play Youtube. Exiting the app and resuming playback through the iOS Control Center will allow for background play.

If your using an Android, take advantage of the Telegram messaging app. Just send yourself a Youtube link and when clicking, the video will play directly without transferring you to the youtube app or mobile browser.
