SZA popped out on the scene with CTRL and made an impression with her honest and relatable music. Her music touched on topics and a point of view that is not always given light such as struggling with low self esteem, toxic-relationships, the angst and confusion of a person’s 20’s and this wove into an R&B, Hip-Hop and indie sound. Riding on the wave of her success, SZA is already back in the studio creating her next album. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, SZA revealed that she is making an album with Tame Impala and Marc Ronson. Tame Impala veers towards a wavy rock vibe and Marc Ronson is a Grammy Award-winning producer. In her next album, she does not want to be put into a bucket that is just R&B and indie but to just make music.

SZA explains that “People grapple with labeling me as Hip-Hp, R&B or pop, and it’s interesting to me. I’m just making music,” she said. “I listen to Stevie Nicks, I love classical jazz, I love folk, I love rap. I love Modest Mouse. I’m making an album with Tame Impala and Mark Ronson. When you try to label it, you remove the option for it to be limitless. It diminishes the music.” In the summer, Mark Ronson and Kevin Parker from Tame Impala showcased a song featuring SZA at Governor’s Ball Music Festival. It is clear that this collaboration inspired more music with SZA.
