Based heavily on the Detroit emcee’s upbringing, 8 Mile is centered around an aspiring White rapper attempting to launch his career in Hip Hop. The title of the film derives from a highway in Detroit called 8 Mile Road which runs between the Black and White neighborhoods of Detroit. 8 Mile opened at #1 with $51,240,555 in its opening weekend, the then second highest opening for an R-rated movie in the U.S. The film stars Mekhi Phifer, Anthony Mackie, and Xzibit.

Eminem took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Lose Yourself”, making him the first Hip Hop artist to win an Academy Award. 8 Mile received 32 nods, and took home 11.
