An air traffic controller from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport has been charged with possession of weapons of mass destruction.
Paul George Dandan was one of two men arrested Friday in Charlotte after investigators alleged he had a weapon of mass destruction.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, along with the FBI, are conducting an investigation, but do not expect federal charges to be filed against Dandan. Dandan was taken to the Mecklenburg County Jail and has a bond set at $45,000.
Police say they were contacted on Nov. 3 answering a 911 call related to a person possessing a homemade explosive device, which bomb squad agents determined was a homemade pipe bomb, according to local NBC affiliate WCNC.
Detectives found the device had been created by Derrick Fells, who confessed he planned to use the bomb against a neighbor. Police say that Fells gave the bomb to Dandan after deciding not to use the bomb.
Detectives obtained warrants against Fells and Danden on Friday. Both men have been charged. Fells faces charges on three counts of manufacturing a weapon of mass destruction and one count of possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Meanwhile, Dandan was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, acquiring a weapon of mass destruction, and transporting a weapon of mass destruction.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Dandan no longer had access to the airport, but airport officials did not say whether he was still employed by the FAA.
