Social media has changed the way we communicate as humans.
The full development of the Internet, coupled with technological advances provide us the ability to virtually erase political boarders. Regardless of your location in the world, once connected to the Internet your potential reach extends around the globe.
Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat represent the largest and most popular socially interactive platforms. These outlets can place the world in the palm of your hand. Thus cultivating a more interconnected world.
These platforms provide a space for people to openly express thoughts and opinions. As a result, one may realize that all humans share the same or similar social issues. Another consequence is that many people emerge as “experts.” This direct exchange of ideas, morals and values between people of diverse backgrounds is essential to cultivating change amongst all people. President Barack Obama used these tools to promote ideals of empowerment and to mobilize people who felt disconnected or disenfranchised to engage in the political process. But not all political personalities use this influential tool for good.

Donald Trump is one individual known to use social media to express his purest thoughts. Despite regularly offending people with brash statements during televised speeches, Twitter seems to be is favorite social platform. Here, it seems like he tweets whatever comes to his mind as his brash words become personalized attacks on anyone who opposes his opinion. As the nation’s Commander In Chief, it seems he will leave a legacy of abusive and poorly written tweets, rather than a legacy aimed to improve the lives of all American citizens.
Many have wondered why Twitter has never taken action against president considering his numerous offenses. In recent blog post Twitter provided the following reason:
“Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets, would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions.”
Elucidating the statement, Twitter understands their position in disseminating information and has seen fit to share that with the world. Hate it or love it, they have set their policy with a firm hand.
Instagram recently failed to understand their position in aiding change within the global community.
Social media plays an active role in highlighting how people feel about the world around them. As a result people can open a dialogue about issues which commonly effect them. Furthermore, social media works to indirectly check the power of people in elevated positions.
