After months of jockeying over terms, representatives of Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have come to terms for a rematch for the middleweight title on May. 5, Golden Boy Promotions announced.
Alvarez, the younger fighter at 27, will be looking to prove he wasn’t gifted a draw the first time around. There is the thought that he could do better than the previous fight due to his youth, whereas the 35-year-old Golovkin has probably peaked at this point. Still, this is not to say Golovkin is declining and gave his maximum effort for the first fight. Alvarez and Golovkin both spoke about the excitement of the rematch.
“I’m delighted to once again participate in one of the most important boxing events in history. This second fight is for the benefit and pleasure of all fans who desire to see the best fight the best. This time, [Gennady] Golovkin won’t have any excuses regarding the judges because I’m coming to knock him out.”
“I am ready to battle Canelo again and am happy he took this fight again,” Golovkin said. “This is the fight the world wants. This is the fight boxing deserves. I didn’t agree with some of the judges’ decisions in the first fight. This time there will be no doubt. I am leaving the ring as THE middleweight champion of the world.”
Their first encounter was an instant classic. This time around on Cinco de Mayo, we should get an even better fight between the two savvy boxers.
