Last month, Mo’Nique made headlines after calling for a boycott of Netflix. The Oscar-winning actress accused the streaming website of gender and color bias while negotiating a deal for a comedy special. She posted to social media, “Please stand with me, I love us.” Chicago-bred rapper Chance the Rapper showed his support for the actress with a mirage of tweets.
Mo’Nique alleges she was initially offered $500,000 for a comedy special, which she thought was disrespectful in comparison to Amy Schumer, who she alleges received $13 million. Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle were allegedly offered $20 million for their comedy specials.
After calling for the boycott of Netflix, the Almost Christmas star went on radio and tv shows such as Sway In The Morning, The Breakfast Club, and even The View to give her side of the situation. Charlamagne Tha God previously gave her a Donkey of the Day for calling to boycott the streaming platform on January 23.
After The Breakfast Club on Feb 23 to explain her side of the story, she became a big trending topic on Twitter after squaring off with Charlamagne Tha God. The segment received 2.4 million views in just two days. Chance The Rapper follows the footsteps of Jada Pinkett-Smith and Wanda Sykes in supporting the Baltimore native, with Sykes saying at one point that she was offered less than half of Mo’Nique’s $500,000 by the streaming platform but took her talents to another network.
Chance The Rapper went off in a mirage of tweets. “I’m with Mo’Nique,” he said. “Anybody remember when Mo’Nique filmed a special in a women’s correctional facility?”, in reference to a 2007 comedy special entitled Mo’Nique: I Coulda Been Your Cellmate. “I remember”, he continues. Chance concludes with “Black Women, you deserve better”.
