Netflix has some dynamic programming on its game-changing streaming service — we’re still getting through season 2 of 13 Reasons Why and the second half of Rapture over here! — and now they’ve brought together 47 of their most talented actors and actresses for a special photo op.
The new “A Great Day in Hollywood” image (seen above) was inspired by the legendary 1958 Art Kane photo “A Great Day in Harlem,” all the way down to the retro styling and brownstone setting. The whole thing was spearheaded by Netflix’s Strong Black Lead team, which is made up of Black Netflix executives who focus on engaging the African-American audience.
Here’s what video director Lacey Duke had to say in the press release about capturing all the behind the scenes footage seen in the images throughout this article:
“It was a pretty magical couple of hours. All these amazingly talented, beautiful individuals in one space being supportive and just looking stunning together, all here to pull off this one take wonder! Alfre Woodard even lead everyone in an epic rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before we started shooting. It was beautiful, and in a flash it was over. It was probably the most overwhelming two hours of my career haha. I was just so happy to be a part of history.”
