Boogie Cousins was insulted when he did not receive an offer from teams around the league.
The NBA and its fans were in an uproar after it was announced that Demarcus “Boogie” Cousins, signed a 1 year deal with the Golden State Warriors. The defending champs continue to shock the league by enhancing their already dominant team. Adding a four-time all-star and one of the best big men in the league certainly helps to solidify another championship; only if he’s healthy.
Cousins suffered a torn left Achilles back in January and had surgery 5 days after. The most recent superstar to suffer the injury was the Kobe Bryant back in 2013. Bryant, 34 was at the top of his game before injuring his Achilles. The Black Mamba was never the same.
Kobe’s Lakers, who made the biggest splash in free agency by signing LeBron James, had a chance to sign Boogie but backed off giving him an offer. Many teams including the Celtics failed to offer Cousins a satisfying contract as a result of his career-threatening injury.
“It was very insulting to not receive an offer,” Cousins told The Undefeated. “But I understand. I prepared myself for this.”
Despite the injury, many NBA teams allegedly had a “no Demarcus Cousins” policy, due to the All-Star big man’s attitude and character. He led the league in technical fouls in 2017, in addition to creating a negative perception around him. Golden State’s roster also includes a player that remains in the top half of techs per season.
Draymond Green swopped in to recruit Boogie. The 2017 Defensive Player of the Year has a similar reputation but understands how to channel that energy to propel the Warriors’ greatness. Green can serve as a mentor to the all-star center and has called him the best big man in the league in the past. He expressed his joy once the deal when down.

Cousins sees the signing to GSW as “chess move.” It is unsure when he will return. An Achilles injury is a 12-15 month process on average to resume basketball-related activity. As of now, Boogie is just happy, he can boogie in the Bay.
“The crazy thing is, it has been tough for me,” he says. “But I’m just happy to be with the champs.”
