If you think Drake’s run of eight number one albums is special, Marvel just dropped their 20th straight number one film in Ant-Man and The Wasp. Variety reports the sequel to the 2015 original brought in $76.5 million in the opening weekend. The original film hit theaters to the tune of $57 million.
The film starred Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly and picked up after the events of Captain America: Civil War and just before the world vanished from a snap of Thanos’ fingers in Avengers: Infinity War. Many fans were flocking to the theaters to see if the film would shine a light on where Ant-Man was during the epic Infinity War battle that took place around the world and finished, for that film, in Wakanda.
Ant-Man is the third number one for Marvel Studies this year, following Black Panther, which was the first film from the studios to drop this year and the aforementioned Avengers film. The release of the second film in the Ant-Man series will be the last film to release from Marvel this year. The studios will be back in action with Captain Marvel in March of next year followed up by the second half of Avengers in the yet to be subtitled the fourth installment of the Avengers franchise.
The rest of the top three of the box office in the busy summer movie season was rounded out by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom at number two and Incredibles 2 coming in at number three.
