Jaden Smith continues to stake out his own path by releasing his latest music project on his own terms. The “Icon” rapper celebrating his 20th birthday by dropping SYRE: The Electric Album, his second studio album comprised of five new songs only available on his Instagram feed. Smith is taking full advantage of the platform’s new IGTV feature.

Upon visiting his Instagram feed, we find that each post is a piece in the larger picture, which reveals young Jaden sitting on a hillside with the setting sun against his back; clearly he’s in a world of his own. He insists this effort is not the standard rap album, which is pretty apparent when you hear him showing off his vocal range on a few of the tracks.

The album’s contents aren’t entirely new though, but rather electronic versions of music released last year on SYRE. Songs include “ICON?,” “Lost Boy,” “Ninety,” “Fallen” and “B.”

Nonetheless, Smith has come into his own and maybe his Instagram album could start a new trend in Hip-Hop. More and more we see artists opting for shorter albums, but check out clips from a few of the revitalized tracks below to see if this one knocks:
