The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a voluntary precautionary recall on common drugs including active ingredient valsartan, which is found in prescribed drugs used to treat high blood pressure and help prevent heart failure.

The recall was prompted by the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine, also known as NDMA, which is a known cancer risk. It is an organic chemical often used in rocket fuel, lubricants and softeners.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, humans exposed to NDMA for an extended period of time may develop liver damage, which can lead to cancer. The FDA believes the sudden presence of NDMA is due to how the substance was manufactured.

“We have carefully assessed the valsartan-containing medications sold in the United States, and we’ve found that the valsartan sold by these specific companies does not meet our safety standards,” said Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “This is why we’ve asked these companies to take immediate action to protect patients.”

Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare, Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. are the three companies recalling valsartan.

Users prescribed drugs with the presence of valsartan are encouraged to continue taking the recalled drug until they’re able to speak with their doctor for alternative options. To determine if you’re medication has been recalled, look at the drug name and company name on the label of your prescription bottle.
