On this day in Hip Hop history, Harlem duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock released their hit album It Takes Two. As one of Hip Hop’s earlier party albums, this crossover hit helped to cement Rob Base and E-Z Rock their place in club anthem history.
With two of the duo’s most popular singles on the track list, this album is by far their most successful. Within the first year of its release, It Takes Two was certified platinum by the RIAA and it peaked at #4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart and #31 on the Billboard 200. The album’s singles, “It Takes Two” and “Get On The Dance Floor” were both Top Dance hits with the title track peaking at #3 and “Get On The Dance Floor” claiming the #1 spot on the US Dance chart.
Following this album, the duo released two more studio albums, The Incredible Base and Break of Dawn, before calling it retiring and fading into the memories of Hip Hop fans across the globe. Although the group’s career was short-lived, this album and its singles hold a place in the hearts of many a Hip Hop head and is still a solid selection on any Old School playlist.
