After dropping his stellar album Redemption this past summer — a project that got extra love due to the success of The Championship Tour — TDE’s first out Jay Rock decided to embark on his own tour in support of the LP, which officially kicked off last night (Sept 18) at New York City’s Irving Plaza. After taking a huge bite out of the Big Apple for opening night, it was clear to see that The Big Redemption Tour will be a trailblazing journey for the Cali-bred rap sensation.

The show opened with a performance from the latest TDE signee Reason, who left the stage smoking from all the energy he was receiving from the crowd, even if it was technically just the smoke machine at Irving Plaza doing its thing. Once Jay Rock hit the stage, fans were finally able to express their anticipation for the show as he fired away through past and present cuts, most of them coming from the MC’s critically-acclaimed third studio album. Tracks like “ES Tales,” “Tap Out,” “The Bloodiest” and the crowd-amplifier “Win” blended in perfectly with fan-favorites like “Hood Gone Love It” off 2011’s Follow Me Home and “King’s Dead” off the soundtrack to Black Panther earlier this year.

The night capped off with a few guest surprises, including A$AP Ferg coming through to representing for A$AP Mob and perform some of his recent hits. The moment was less about the two talented rappers collaborating onstage — let’s hope this means it’s happening soon though! — but more or less the union of two guys in separate Hip-Hop crews showing love to each other and expressing unity. It was a cool sight to witness, only to be outdone by Kendrick Lamar himself calling in live to show his own support for the homie and extend gratitude to fans of TDE as a whole.
