Free agent safety Eric Reid is back in the National Football League, signing a deal with the Carolina Panthers. Many believed Reid would not see the field this year, despite being one of the best safeties available, due to kneeling with Colin Kaepernick during the National Anthem.
The Panthers announced the signing of Reid on Twitter, displaying an image of the safety with a raised fist next to the helmet of the franchise. In the tweet, the Panthers also raised their fist. They followed those tweets with the actual signing moment for Reid.
“Eric has been a starting safety in the NFL and has played at a high level throughout his career,” general manager Marty Hurney said on the signing. “After we put (safety) Da’Norris Searcy on injured reserve, Ron (Rivera) and I discussed our options, and Eric was at the top of our list. He is a physical safety with good ball skills and play-making ability.”
