While it’s quite common for the ladies of Hollywood to arrive in their most avant garde gowns when it’s time to walk the red carpet, the fellas are usually stuck wearing a simple black tux with a white Oxford shirt. The only real flex that guys get to indulge in is with the tie option — classic Windsor or bow tie fly? — or when it comes to the footwear. However, instead of opting for classic black brogues or even the on-trend Chelsea Boot, famed director Spike Lee decided to hit up the 2019 Golden Globe ceremony this past weekend (Jan 6) in a pair of all-gold-everything custom kicks by way of Jordan Brand and legendary footwear designer Tinker Hatfield.

Lee was in attendance to celebrate his “Best Director” nomination for his contribution to BlacKkKlansman, which was also nominated for “Best Drama,” “Best Actor in a Drama” (John David Washington) and “Best Supporting Actor in a Drama” (Adam Driver). All four nominations lost, with Lee’s nominated efforts going to Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Bohemian Rhapsody winning Best Drama, Rami Malek snagging Best Actor and Mahershala Ali gaining another rightful win for his role as Don Shirley in Green Book. However, nobody was rivaling Spike Lee’s kicks that night, which have a thick translucent outsole that read “TRUTH TO POWER,” “SPEAK ON IT,” “RESIST” and of course “BLACKkKLANSMAN” etched onto all four sides of the shoe’s perimeter. Completing the look are motifs for his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks brand, as well as “Do The Right Thing” written on the heel. That reminds us though; when are we gonna get official word on those Sal’s Pizza-themed Air Jordan 4s expected to drop in a few months?!

While Spike isn’t the first to bring kicks to the red carpet — Millie Bobby Brown killed it in Converse last year at the 2018 SAG Awards, and Virgil Abloh stunted hard in his OFF-WHITE™ Jordan 1s at the 2018 Met Gala — we really hope to see more silver screen stars in sneakers. Who wouldn’t want to see Denzel hitting up the Academy Awards in some fresh Uptowns, or even beloved starlet Meryl Streep rocking Rihanna’s latest PUMA collab. Hey, it could happen!
