Mexican drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera has been found guilty on all 10 federal criminal counts he was facing. As the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, it was believed that El Chapo has made nearly $14 billion. He is now likely to serve life in prison.
CNN reports El Chapo did not appear rattled or hurt by the verdict, instead he waved and smiled as his wife, who returned a smile and delivered a message of “Good, thank you” when asked about her condition.
“We are obviously disappointed with the jury’s verdict in the trial of Joaquín Guzmán Loera but are respectful of the process and the jury’s decision,” defense attorney Eduardo Balarezo said.
Throughout the lengthy case, 200 hours of testimony was provided from 56 witnesses as well as testimonies of lavish lifestyles and weapons, which included a diamond-encrusted pistol, intense accounts of murder and more. Within his charges, Guzmán faced distribution of various types of drugs and guns.
The federal trial took place in New York City but had contributing prosecutors ranging from U.S. cities like Chicago, Miami, and San Diego. el Chapo was extradited to the United States in January of 2017 after escaping Mexican prisons twice, most recently by a tunnel in 2016.
