‘Strong Black Legends’ Podcast to Premiere on Netflix

Netflix is known as the go-to service for streaming films and their own original content. Now Netflix will attempt to make its make on the podcast world. The streaming giant will premiere Strong Black Legends, a podcast (iTunes, Spotify, RSS) about African-Americans who’ve left a lasting impact on Hollywood and the entertainment industry. It debuted on February 12th (Tuesday). The first season will be hosted by Tracy Clayton, the former host of BuzzFeed’s Another Round podcast. The premise of the podcast is to “give Black Hollywood Legends their flowers and unearths life lessons as well as untold stories about their career-defining moments.”

Each Tuesday Tracy interviews African American “Legends” and uncovers their untold stories about how each of them fought to make it successful artists in the entertainment industry. In a show of love, Tracey presents flowers to each guest on the show.

The inaugural season will include guests like Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther), John Witherspoon (Friday), Loretta Divine (Waiting To Exhale), and Garrett Morris (the first black Saturday Night Live actor and Martin) and many more surprise guests to be announced

The first episode of Strong Black Legends will feature the incomparable, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Lynn Whitfield. Her film and T.V. credits include The Josephine Baker Story (1991), A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996), Gone Fishin’ (1997), Eve’s Bayou (1997), Stepmom (1998), Head of State (2003), Madea’s Family Reunion (2006) and The Women (2008). She currently stars in hit OWN drama Greenleaf.

Describing the importance of the podcast and the contributions of Black people to American society, Whitfield said, “There are dynamics of families and traditions in Black family that have not a damn thing to do with white people, racism, slavery. Some of our complexity is just ours and I want to own that. And I want to talk about that.”
