The field to represent the Democratic Party for the President of the United States just got a little bit more crowded. Former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke has announced his candidacy.
Politics insiders have suspected O’Rourke would announce his campaign, with him formally doing so in a video released to his Twitter, along with the opening statement of “I am running to serve you as the next president. The challenges we face are the greatest in living memory.”
In the video, O’Rourke sat with his wife for his campaign announcement.
“Amy and I are happy to share with you that I’m running to serve you as the next president of the United States of America,” O’Rourke said in a joint video statement with Amy Hoover Sanders. “This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us.”
I am running to serve you as the next president. The challenges we face are the greatest in living memory. No one person can meet them on their own. Only this country can do that, and only if we build a movement that includes all of us. Say you’re in: https://t.co/EKLdkVET2u pic.twitter.com/lainXyvG2n

The official campaign kickoff for O’Rourke will begin on March 30. He recently lost a campaign to become governor of Texas but received support from Beyonce and Travis Scott. Previous announcements for the 2020 campaign include Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, and Cory Booker. Many also suspect former Vice-President Joe Biden will announce a campaign.
