For the past ten years, The Roots have furnished The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as the official house band, giving the pretense an organic hip-hop flavor. In a recent episode, the Philadelphia collective’s lead MC Black Thought broke into a rap session about the multiple amount of candidates for the 2020 United States presidential election.
Fallon, in his usual humorous habitat, mentioned the recent news of former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke’s addition to the 2020 presidential election pointing out the fact it is difficult to keep up with the number to candidates in the race. Black Thought immediately chimed in and suggested the use of hip-hop’s rap element can help followers of the election keep up with the scroll of growing candidates. “It’s not that hard. Especially if you write a helpful rap about it,” the “Twofifteen” rapper said before bursting into a freestyle:
“We’ve got Warren in the race, and she’s ready to rock/ We’ve got Julian and Harris pulling up on the block/ Cory Booker and Delaney have the bald game locked/ And Bernie’s back again, he’s looking like he got shot/ We’ve got Williamson and Klobuchar and Gabbard and Yang/ Pete and Hickenlooper have the funniest names…”
Making mentions of Julian Castro, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, John Delaney, Bernie Sanders, Marianne Williamson, Amy Klobuchar, Tulsi Gabbard, Andrew Yang, Pete Buttigieg and John Hickenlooper, Thought continued the rap as the class act band tuned up and concluded the spit by mentioning Kanye West in lieu of his self proclaimed run at the 2015 VMA’s. “And then Beto’s there, and Biden gives a massage/ It’s only 2019, and it’s anyone guess/ Oh, and we’re still waiting to hear from Mr. Kanye West,” he raps.
Black Thought’s helpful rap just might help hip-hop heads stay on top of the 2020 presidential election in a rather cool way. A cool that hip-hop has historically managed to set the precedent for worldwide. Check out Black Thought’s election rap on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, below.
